02 / Careers · Why SSM

What it's like to work at SSM.

W-2 employment, weekly pay, license renewals on us. Real office backup when DOB shows up. The license number on your card is the one we put on the project filing.

Why Work at Skilled Safety Management

Most NYC site safety firms operate as license rental companies. They sign up licensed managers as 1099 contractors, take a margin, and leave the manager to handle DOB violations, paperwork, and project disputes alone. We don't.

Skilled Safety Management is built around the simple idea that a credentialed manager should be paid like a professional, supported like one, and respected like one. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Six things we do differently

1. Direct W-2 employment

Every credentialed person on our roster is a W-2 employee. That means real benefits, real payroll taxes paid, real disability insurance, real workers' comp coverage, and a 401(k) you can actually contribute to. No license rental.

2. Real office backup

When DOB shows up at your project unexpectedly, when a COI request comes in at 10 PM, when a paperwork question stumps the GC, you call our admin team in Brooklyn and we handle it. You stay focused on the field. Most of our managers say this single difference is what made them switch from another firm.

3. Weekly pay, never delayed

Friday direct deposits. Every Friday. Period.

4. License renewals on us

DOB SSM, DOB SSC, DOB CSM, FDNY F-89, FDNY F-58, FDNY F-60, OSHA-30, SST Supervisor 62-hour, First Aid/CPR/AED. Every one of those renewals is paid for by SSM, on company time, with study materials reimbursed.

5. Continuing education time

We pay for and protect time for credential upgrades. SSC working toward SSM. Fire watch working toward F-89. Manager working toward Construction Safety Engineering. We've helped a lot of people climb a credential ladder. Our hiring policy is to promote from within first whenever a higher role opens.

6. Predictable assignments

We don't keep our staff on the bench. The mobilization promise we make to clients (48 hours from contract to on-site) is only possible because we keep our managers on rolling 6-18 month assignments with planned movement to the next project. You're not waiting between gigs.

What we don't tolerate

  • License rental in any form
  • Wage theft, overtime games, or "off the clock" work
  • Pushing project responsibility onto field staff that the office should be handling
  • Discrimination based on race, gender, language, age, religion, or anything else
  • Cutting corners to make a GC happy at the cost of safety

Who we're looking for

People who take the work seriously. Who hold their credentials carefully. Who can handle telling a GC "no" when the conditions don't pass. Who like NYC construction enough to stay in it for a career, not a season.

If that's you, send us your resume.
